Some words about coin collecting

Coin collecting is a very popular hobby among people of many ages. Children like to collect coins that look pretty, shiny or unusual. Adults will create their coin collections more around value rather than looks. There are many ways to collect coins. Some will just grab any coin that they stumble upon, while while others buy in bulk and eagerly anticipate limited mint editions of coins. Both groups will encounter similar questions in the pursuit of their hobby.

Like handling the coin collection. The basics are simple: handle the coins as little as possible. Fingerprints on an uncirculated coin can dramatically cut its value, so if you really need to handle the coin, do so from the edge and never on its face. If you lay the coin down, use a velvet pad. If none is available, any soft and clean cloth is better than nothing. If you are handling coins of extremely high value, use surgical gloves and a protective face mask - the latter to protect the coin from the moisture of your breath.

How to keep a coin collection clean? Remarkably, you shouldn’t! Most collectors look for authenticity more than for shiny newness. Zealous cleaning destroys value. Even a clean, soft rag will leave microscopic scratches on the coin. So: don't clean.

Then comes storage. Coins should be protected from temperature extremes, humidity, dust, dirt, chemicals, and fingerprints. Dehumidifying equipment is necessary for very expensive coin collections, as well as locking their housing as airtight as possible. Low value coins have less strict demands - but bear in mind that today's cheap coin may be tomorrow's treasure!
